The quick answer
- Put it in the quote. NC State Extension lists cleanup and disposal as a contract term.
- Chips: fresh chips are mostly carbon and can pull nitrogen from soil, so let them weather before using them in beds (UGA Extension).
- Firewood: avoid moving it out of the county where you got it (UGA Extension).
- Floyd County pickup takes limbs and trunks up to 12 feet long, but not stumps.

Using fresh wood chips
UGA Extension (Henry Hibbs, Oconee County) says fresh chips are mostly carbon and can pull nitrogen from the soil as they start to decompose. He advises stacking them to weather for months, up to a year, before use.
When you do use mulch:
- Spread it 2 to 3 inches deep over the roots.
- Keep it 3 to 4 inches away from the trunk.
- Do not pile it against a trunk. Rodents can chew the bark.
Firewood: do not move it
UGA Extension says to avoid moving firewood out of the county where you acquired it. Moving firewood is one way invasive insects and diseases spread, and a clean-looking log may still carry pests. Burn it near where it came from.
