The Oaks You’ll Find Around Rome

Floyd County sits where the Etowah and Oostanaula meet to form the Coosa. River bottoms, clay ridges and old home lots all grow different oaks.

Water Oak

  • Very common in yards and along streets.
  • Fast-growing, but short-lived compared to other oaks.
  • Prone to internal rot as it ages, often with little outside warning.
  • The oak most likely to drop a large limb or fail in a storm.

Willow Oak

  • Narrow, willow-like leaves. Popular street and yard tree.
  • Grows big fast. Roots often lift sidewalks and driveways.
  • Wide canopy catches wind.

Southern Red Oak

  • Common on drier upland sites and ridges.
  • Sensitive to root damage from building or grading.
  • Decline can take years before it becomes obvious.

White Oak

  • The longest-lived oak here. Very strong wood.
  • Hates root disturbance. New driveways or trenching can kill it slowly.
  • Often worth saving if it is healthy.

Post Oak

  • Grows on dry, rocky ground.
  • Very sensitive to soil compaction and fill dirt.

Why Oaks Fail: The Main Risks

Most oak failures come from things you can’t easily see.

  • Heart rot. Decay inside the trunk. Common in older water oaks.
  • Root damage. Construction, trenching or fill dirt within the drip line.
  • Hypoxylon canker. A fungus that takes over drought-stressed oaks. Look for bark sloughing off and gray or tan crusty patches.
  • Drought stress. Dry summers weaken oaks. Problems often show a year or two later.
  • Storm load. Big, heavy limbs over long spans snap in high wind or ice.

Warning Signs on an Oak Tree

Call someone to look at the tree if you see any of these:

  • Mushrooms or fungal shelves at the base or on the trunk.
  • Bark falling off in large sheets.
  • Cracks or seams running up the trunk.
  • A sudden new lean, or soil heaving on one side.
  • Dead limbs high in the canopy (called “deadwood”).
  • Hollow sound or open cavities.
  • Leaves browning early in summer on one side only.

One sign doesn’t always mean the tree must go. Several signs together deserve a closer look.

When Oak Tree Removal in Rome, GA Makes Sense

Removal is usually worth considering when:

  • Decay has spread through a large part of the trunk or root flare.
  • The tree leans toward a house, driveway or power line and the lean is new.
  • Hypoxylon canker is active on the trunk.
  • More than about half the canopy is dead.

If the oak is healthy and just overgrown, trimming may be the better answer. See our storm preventive trimming page.

For big oaks near structures, see large tree removal. For trees that are already dead, see dead tree removal.

FAQ

What is the most dangerous oak in Rome, GA?

Older water oaks cause the most problems. They grow fast and often decay inside before showing outside signs.

Can a sick oak tree be saved?

Sometimes. Early root stress or drought damage can improve with care. Advanced heart rot or hypoxylon canker usually can’t be reversed.

Do I need a permit to remove an oak on my property?

Rules depend on where the tree is and who owns the land. Check with the City of Rome or Floyd County before work starts. HOA rules may also apply.

Why is my oak dying after we built a driveway?

Oak roots spread far past the canopy. Digging or adding fill near them can kill the tree slowly over several years.

How can I tell if an oak limb might fall?

Look for cracks where the limb meets the trunk, dead wood, and fungus. Have someone look at any large limb over a roof or driveway.
